1972 Seiko 6139-8029 Automatic Chronograph Day/Date “Rally”
1972 Seiko 6139-8029 Automatic Chronograph Day/Date “Rally”
Most of the 6139 lineup features sports driven and racing styled chronographs, however, there were a few casual pieces that are no doubt memorable, and when you can land a great example, “must haves” for those seeking a broader appeal. This 8029 from May of ‘72 is exactly that. It’s completely original aside from a replacement acrylic crystal, and bracelet. The case features classic 1970’s styling with rolled hooded lugs, and a deep “east to west” brush finish along the top. With no bezel, the beveled acrylic is set directly into the case and gives way to a flat silver sunburst, tri-color dial. The minute register is a rich charcoal gray, and the lengthy hour markers are separated by an azure blue blocked minute track. The hour and minute hands are stand outs in black and white, and the chronograph hands are a bright blaze orange. The day and date are framed in black, and the original luminous plots have developed a uniform cream patina. The bracelet was lost to time, so I paired it with a genuine, and period correct, Seiko/Stelux keyed “block” link that bears a close resemblance to the original. It’s tapered for a seamless transition from case to bracelet, and I refinished it to match the original horizontal brushed finish of the case. Post service, the 6139B is keeping time to within a few seconds per day, and the chronograph functions are snappy and responsive. The day and date can be quickset by pressing the crown. Dripping in 70’s vibe, it’s an easy ‘go to’ for color and versatility, and is sure to be a fast favorite in any rotation.
