1973 Seiko 4006-6049 “Bell-Matic” Alarm Day/Date 17j
1973 Seiko 4006-6049 “Bell-Matic” Alarm Day/Date 17j
The first Bell-Matics were released in November of 1966, and over the next 12 years a wide variety of styles and color combinations would guarantee that those looking for a robust and reliable wrist alarm with undeniable presence could find exactly that. Seiko’s 4006 calibre movements were available in 17j export and 27j domestic market versions (there’s even a very short lived 21j variant), both of which offer solid reliability, and relevant design decades after production. From classic dress styles to colorful casuals, there’s a “Bell” to suit every taste. This example from April of ‘73 is as striking to the ear, as it is to the eye. The 39mm tonneau case has smooth contours, great lines, and an integrated bracelet for a seamless finish. The dial is an absolute light show of color and pattern topped in a glossy lacquer finish. It’s separated into three distinct sections, beginning with the sunburst inner that radiates out to the hours. Applied and machined, the hour markers are stepped and split with black enamel striping through the center, and small luminous plots along the outer edge. Along the inner edge of the markers, the dial pattern shifts to a concentric circular brush finish, and a baby blue block minute chapter rides along the outer edge. Framing the dial is a wide, rotating alarm ring in the same cobalt blue as the dial, but with a large, bright red cursor section. A sharp luminous triangle with a black border aids in pinpoint setting of the alarm. Polished and striped batons track and hours and minutes, and s slim, polished sweep counts the seconds. The case finishes appear to have been touched up at some point, but this “Bell” is completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and post service, is keeping near perfect time. The bell has a crisp tone, sets smoothly, and has been carefully aligned for accurate setting. It comes attached to the original integrated “keyed” link bracelet that’s comfortable on the wrist, and provides a seamless fit and finish. With the original bracelet often missing, and retrofitting a complicated endeavor, complete examples of this reference can be hard to come by. For that reason, this is the first opportunity we’ve had one to offer, and we’re certain it will be a welcome addition to any collection.
