1969 JDM Seiko 5126-7030 Automatic “5” Day/Date 23j “Rally”

$295.00

From Seiko’s Daini division, this 5126-7030 from January of 1969 mixes cool and class for a devastating mid-century combination that demands attention. The dial is a deep gray sunburst with a glossy lacquer finish that’s topped with ramped monument markers in black with silver striping. Its “Rally” nickname stems from the “checker” pattern created by the alternating black block and 1/5th minute hashes of the double row chapter. Framing the dial is a steep, polished reheat that accentuates the depth and scatters light across the deep grain finish of the dial. The hour and minute hands are stout polished batons with black striping through the center, and a long and lean sweep counts the seconds. The case architecture is a classic Seiko “C,” with elements of Tanaka’s “Grammar of Design” pushing through. Crisp lines, flat planes, and polished surfaces make for a clean bright layout that immediately draws the eye.Driving the hands, the 5126 is a buttery smooth automatic that foregoes Seiko’s typical “magic lever” winding system in favor of a reverser wheel design that’s very efficient, and a robust, reliable timekeeper. Post service its keeping near perfect time, and all functions are operating as designed. The date can be quick set by pressing the crown, and the day is semi-quick set. The case is unpolished, and it’s completely original aside from a replacement mineral crystal. In keeping with it’s “mid-century muscle” aesthetic, we’ve paired it with a genuine, and period correct Seiko Milanese bracelet that completes the look, and provides a fitting finish that’s sure to make this one an easy “go to” in any rotation.
