1971 Seiko 4006-6011 Bell-Matic Auto Day/Date 17j
The first Bell-Matics rolled off the production line in 1966, and were at that time, the very first self-winding wrist alarm with a central rotor. Seiko continued the line for another 12 years with a wide array of styles ranging from colorful casuals, to refined classics. This example from October of 1971 is housed in a compact tonneau with comfortable contouring, and a light trapping radial finish. The dial is a crisp silver white linen beneath a slick lacquer finish that’s virtually flawless. It’s topped with applied baguette markers with a mirror finish and channeled luminous wells. The hour and minute hands are tapered batons with clean luminous windows, and a slender sweep counts the seconds. A framed day/date window resides at three, and the date can be quick set by firmly pressing the alarm on/off toggle above the crown. The day is semi-quick set. A slim, satin silver alarm bezel seamlessly frames the dial and is marked in printed five minute intervals. The alarm cursor is a bright red triangle with a five minute countdown. It can be rotated via the crown in the second position, and has been carefully aligned for accurate setting. It’s unpolished, and completely original aside from a replacement acrylic crystal, and post service is keeping time to within a few seconds per day. We’ve paired it with a full stitched gray canvas over leather for a casual fit and finish that keeps the focus on the dial. The “bell” has a bright, vibrant tone that will undoubtedly grab your attention, and make this stunner the loudest new member of any rotation.
