Seiko's Speed Timer roster defines great vintage racing chronographs, and as they were only produced for the Japanese market, owning one can be a bit of a challenge. With a 21 jewel version of the venerable 6139, these examples were definitely a step up from their export counterparts, and boasted a few other distinct features as well. This 7020 from June of '71 is an absolute stunner. It sports a deeply set matte black dial with a split, bi-color sub register in black and a vibrant blue. The "Speed Timer" logo sits prominently mid dial opposite the blacked out day/date (English/Kanji) frame. The minute track is trimmed in “Speed Timer” orange, and provides the perfect break between the dial and the glossy black count down bezel which can be rotated via the crown. The outer bezel features a black inlay, and the tonneau case is contoured for comfort on the wrist. The case is unpolished and the corners still sharp and defined, though the original finishes have mostly faded with wear and age. It is completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and comes attached to the original “triple hinged” Speed Timer” bracelet. Post service the 6139B is keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are flawless. Don’t miss your chance at this one, it surely won’t last long.
