Seiko’s 6106 “Rally” Sport Divers are among some of the most sought after vintage models the brand has to offer. Named for their bright colors and checked patterns on the dial or bezel, these bold beauties are easier to spot than they are to acquire. Even tougher to source are the two JDM variants that share not only a single reference, but a single color… black. Available in two distinct dial layouts, the 8510 is the dark side of an otherwise flamboyant “Rally” family, and we’re here for it. This example from October of ’69 sports a tough “tool” aesthetic, but with recognizable features. The matte black dial is perfect. It’s set with applied monument markers with split finished polished ramps, enamel black tops, and a silver stripe laid through the middle of each. The hour and minute hands are polished batons that have retained their mirror finish, and a honey gold sweep counts the seconds. The single  spot of color is the royal blue “Sports” designation obove the six. A polished frame surrounds the shared day/date window, and the day is displayed in Kanji and English. Both the day and the date can be quickset via pressing the crown. The barrel tonneau case is unpolished with sharp corners, and the original factory finishes are still crisp. A heavily knurled friction bezel sits on top, and the black ‘count-up’ insert shows only moderate wear. The pip has its original acrylic lens, and the luminous material beneath has developed a warm golden patina that’s a near perfect match to the sweep. The hacking 6106C is a bullet proof Seiko workhorse that’s keeping near perfect time post service, and ready to provide many more years of reliable service. We’ve paired it with a “Tropic Sport” style strap in black composite for a comfortable fit and “black out” finish. It’s completely original including a polished domed “hardlex” crystal, and is sure to be the toughest addition to any roster.
