1965 Seiko 6619-8070 Automatic Day/Date 21j
1965 Seiko 6619-8070 Automatic Day/Date 21j
The Seiko 5 series was introduced in 1963, and began a legacy that still thrives today. The Sportsmatic was the first to carry the 5 logo, and represented an affordable to approach to quality timepieces. Built on 5 specifications, it was a watch built for the “every man (or woman)” looking for a watch that not only looked great, but could be as dependable as it was comfortable. The requirements are an automatic movement, water resistant case, single window day/date display, recessed crown at the four o’clock position, and a rugged, dependable build. While this example from October of ‘65 hits them all, it carries neither the Sportsmatic or 5 branding of the 8070 from the previous year (’64). A small vintage Seiko mystery, but one we’ll welcome, as the nearly sterile dial with only a badge and two lines of text is everything we love about mid-century Seiko. Clean, crisp, and minmalism at its best, the timeless appeal and classic architecture is irresistible. The dial is a silver white sunburst with a glossy lacquer finish that’s set with polished baguettes and a framed day/date window at three. The hour and mintute hands are broad dauphines that are easy to read and well proportioned, and a slender sweep nearly drags the raised minute chapter. The case is a classic affair with contoured lugs and a thin comfortable profile. Post service, it’s keeping time to within a few seconds per day, and the date can be quick set by pressing the crown. The day is non quick set. We’ve paired it with a smooth gray leather with cream stitching for a comfortable and versatile fit and finish. If a clean mid century casual is what you’re missing, this one will not disappoint.
