With the majority of the 6139 line up built around racing and sports oriented designs, a casual departure with versatile appeal is a welcomed addition for many collectors. Competing against funky 70’s styles like the 8020 or the 8030 (examples of both can be seen in our archive), the 7002 is a timeless classic with subtle hints as to its vintage roots. This example from January of ‘76 is solid proof of just that. The dial is matte black with applied markers and rich patina in the luminous. There are three pin point blemishes above the Suwa logo that appear as whitish dots within the finish of the dial itself, and some very light marks are visible on the sub register. The minute track is divided into segmented white blocks, and beyond that, the 1/5th seconds have faded from a red orange to gold. Framing the dial is a decimal chapter than can be used to calculate anything from production rates to sports statistics by dividing one minute into 100 equal parts. The bright white hour and minute hands offer great contrast and are easily legible at a glance. The chronograph hands in orange add a nice color pop against the mostly monochromatic layout. The case is a soft tonneau that appears to have been lightly refinished, as all of the corners are still quite crisp. It comes attached to the original tapered “fishbone” bracelet that’s also been lightly brushed. Overall, this is a great example, and we’ve taken the refinishing and blemishes under consideration regarding price. It’s all original aside from a replacement crystal and NOS Seiko tear drop minute register hand. Post service it’s keeping excellent time and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. If you’re looking to add a versatile vintage chronograph to your line up, and at a bargain, this one will not disappoint.
