Most of the 6139 lineup features sports driven and racing styled chronographs, however, there were a few casual pieces that were no doubt memorable, and if you can find the right example, “must haves” for any true collector. This 8020 from January of ‘72 is exactly that, and just a bit more. While this reference may look familiar, chances are, you may not have seen this color way, or bracelet variation. That’s because it was never available in North America. In fact, it was only available to the South East Asian (SEA) market through Seiko’s sole distribution partner in that region, Thong Sia. The Seiko/

Thong Sia relationship was an incredibly important one to both parties, and as a result, Seiko allowed for specialized configurations and color ways never seen elsewhere. The silver and “Aussie” Pogue, “Reverse Lume” Pogue, and chocolate 6011 are other examples of this collaboration. Thong Sia variants were exclusively fitted with Stelux bracelets (Stelux is currently the parent company to Thong Sia), and the day displays were almost always Roman numerals or Chinese.

The case features classic 1970’s styling with rolled hooded lugs, and a deep “east to west” brush finish along the top. Without a bezel, the domed acrylic is set directly into the mid-case and gives way to a matte chocolate brown, tri-color dial. The minute register is a rich sepia tone, and the lengthy hour markers are separated by a stark white block minute track. While the dial is otherwise very clean, there is a visible blemish that breaks the paint between the minute register and the 7 hour marker. The hour and minute hands are contrasting in black and white, and the chronograph hands grab attention in a bold tangerine orange. The day and date are framed in white, and the original luminous material has developed an appropriate cream patina. Attached is the original Stelux “Rally” bracelet with copper brown windows tapering in size along with the links on either side until meeting at the short “Speed Timer” style clasp. It is unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and the factory finishes are still quite crisp. The 6139B behind the dial is just as impressive, and post service is keeping near perfect time. The chronograph functions are snappy and responsive, and on the wrist, it feels just as good as it looks. A rare variant of a familiar classic, this perfect fall palette for the wrist is bound to be your new “go to.”
