We’re always on the lookout for vintage affordables with classic and timeless appeal. Time and time again, Seiko’s Daini division delivers. This day/date from June of ‘79 is a perfect example. The dial is a stunning navy blue sunburst with a slick lacquer finish, and topped with polished applied markers and a framed day/date window. The hour and minute hands are thin batons with a bright polished finish, and white striping through the center. Counting the seconds is a long and slender polished sweep. The day and date are positioned at three o’clock, and a subtle minute track in silver provides a balanced border. The case is textbook Seiko, wherein the mid-case seems to float between adjoined, finely tapered lugs. It closely follows Tanaka’s “Grammar of Design” concept through flat planes, crisp angles, and an almost faceted appearance. The 7009 driving the hands is a tried and true workhorse that is keeping near perfect time post service, and is ready for many more years of reliable timekeeping. The day and date can both be quickset via the crown. The day is advanced by depressing the crown, and the date by rotating the crown counter-clockwise in the second position. It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and we’ve paired it with a olive suede leather that pairs perfectly with the dial and offers versatility on the wrist. If a clean and affordable casual is on your list, we’re betting this one will more than scratch your itch.
