For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. From the “Pepsi” tachymetric bezel, the the “H-Link” bracelet, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. This example from November of ‘72 is a stunner overall. The golden sunburst dial is mesmerizing. The polished hour markers and hands sport a mirror finish, and the original luminous material has remained a crisp bright white throughout. The chronograph hands are bright red, and free of any chipping or paint loss.  Due to the process in which these dials were manufactured, oxygen can penetrate the lacquer finish and get to the layer of silver beneath the paint to cause oxidation. Most commonly, this is observed as a darkened ring around the sub register as seen here. Aside from that, only a single “freckle” resides at mid-dial between the 9 o’clock marker and  hands.  The rotating inner bezel bears only a slight, even fade and rotates smoothly in either direction via the crown. The tachymetric bezel shows some modest wear, and a light but even color fade through the red portion. The case is crisp and unpolished with the original finishes still intact, and it’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal. Post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are snappy and responsive. We’ve paired it with a distressed brown suede leather that showcases the dial and offers comfort and versatility on the wrist. A true Seiko icon, it’s a must have for any collection.
