At the crossroads of vintage and versatile sits Seiko's 6139-6015. It features clean classic lines, and a layout as timeless today as it was when it rolled off the line more than 45 years ago. We’ve seen a marked increase in requests for gold watches, and this example from February of ’72 was an opportunity to meet that demand that was, well… golden. In recent years it’s been discovered that the “Little Dragon” himself, Bruce Lee, wore a black dialed variant of the 601X, and vintage Seiko enthusiasts have latched on to the connection and attached the “Bruce Lee” nickname to the handful of variants under this and related references. While we welcome the uptick in calls for gold watches, it’s important our standards are reflected in the condition of those we might offer. Gold plating will wear over time, and that wear through can quickly detract from the allure of those warm yellow tones. This example has no visible wear through aside from the very outer corner of the bezel, and the original factory finishes and corners are still intact, and quite sharp. Even if you’re not into yellow watches, there’s no denying that this one is an attention getter. The dial is a sunburst gold with a matte finish contrasted with black applied markers, and bi-color gold and black hour and minute hands. The chronograph hands are a solid gloss black with no chipping or paint loss. It comes attached to the original “Railroad” link bracelet in gold with some light plating wear through on the hinges and clasp. The bracelet was a bit short, so I’ve preemptively installed a clasp extension that should comfortably accommodate most wrist sizes. The 6139B is keeping near perfect time post service, and the chronograph functions are smooth and responsive. If your rotation is feeling a bit cold, here’s your opportunity to warm things up.
