1968 JDM Seiko 4006-7000 “Bell-Matic” 27j

$550.00

The first Bell-Matics were released in November of 1966, and over the next 12 years a wide variety of styles and color combinations would guarantee that those looking for a robust wrist alarm with undeniable presence could find exactly that. Seiko’s 4006 calibre movements were available in 17j export, and 27j domestic market versions (there’s even a very short lived 21j variant), both of which offer solid reliability, and relevant design decades after production. From classic dress styles to colorful casuals, there’s a “Bell” to suit every taste. The 7000 was the original design, and the thoughtful layout, balance, and subtle details keep it a favorite among collectors. From December of ‘68, this one boasts a silver linen dial with a heavy "north to south" grain beneath a slick lacquer finish. The polished applied markers have broad beveled edges and luminous channels through the center. A steep chapter frames the edge with a near vertical minute track, and rises to meet the polished fluted cursor ring that is rotated via the crown. The alarm is set by aligning the luminous pointer outlined in red opposite the designated time via the crown in the second position. The hour and minute hands are polished, beveled batons with large luminous windows, and counting the seconds, a long thin sweep that reaches well into the hour markers. The case is a familiar Seiko “C”design in which the lugs appear as two half-moons with the dial suspended between. It features polished beveled edges for a wider appearance, and the top finish is a vertical brush that aligns with the dial. Post service, it’s keeping near perfect time, and all functions are operable. The date can be quick set by pressing the alarm on/off toggle, and the day is semi-quick set. The alarm cursor rotates smoothly for accurate setting, and the bell has a crisp tone and frequency. It ranks among the nicest complete examples we’ve seen, and the only instance of the original “Railroad” bracelet still attached. As it was a touch short, we’ve installed a seamless clasp extension to allow for a comfortable fit on most wrists. A monochromatic classic that likes to be heard, it’s sure garner attention in any rotation.
