As important as any watch can be too the efficacy of a brand, the 6309-7040/9 is a perfect delivery of intention. It's as rugged and hard wearing as it is aesthetically satisfying. Even as the first "Turtles" released in 1976 turned 43 this year, one thing is certain... they never get old. This example from May of ‘81 is no exception, and marks the last year that production was completed entirely at Seiko’s Suwa division. The Suwa “S” logo can be seen just above the six o’clock marker, and for many collectors, it’s the first thing they look for when considering a purchase. Unpolished, and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, it's an opportunity to add a true icon to your roster. The luminous plots have developed a soft khaki patina that is even throughout. The hands have retained their polished finish, and only the sweep has visible oxidation near the tail. The bezel rotates with a firm click in either direction, and the insert has only light to moderate wear throughout. The crown and case back screw down tightly, and the 6309A they protect is a workhorse movement ready to provide many more years of service. The case back has some light tooling marks, but all insignia and markings are clear and present. Post service, it has a great reserve and is keeping near perfect time. It ships attached to the original Seiko GL831 straight vent strap and buckle. A split has begun to develop between the 5th and 6th holes which I have attempted to reinforce as these straps are now even rarer than the watch itself, and this one has plenty of life left in it otherwise. A true Seiko icon, and still their top selling diver to date, it’s a must have for any collector
