Looking to compete with the success that Seiko’s Daini division was seeing through the 7000 series movements, the Suwa group set out to streamline, and redesign the 6119 into something both affordable, and eye catching to the entry level market. The result was the 6109. It was a bit thinner, and bore some features similar to the Daini movements. To house the new 6109, designers built a case with sleek lines, a wide body, and a low profile integrated bezel. The 8009-P was available in several striking color ways, including this stunning lacquered blue sunburst. Two other models would eventually come off the line in 1975, but the following year production would not resume. The 6109 was shelved as an orphan calibre, and Seiko moved on. What’s left more than 40 years later is an opportunity to own a short lived piece of Seiko history at an affordable price. This example from August of ‘75 is unpolished, and completely original aside from a replacement crystal. The dial has great depth and throws any available light, no matter the angle. The hands are striped to match the hour markers, and the case is nicely contoured to comfortably fit most any wrist. Post service its keeping near perfect time, and comes attached to the original mixed finish, five-link bracelet. Though eye catching on the bracelet, we’d certainly recommend your favorite distressed brown leather to really bring the dial to life. Either way, it’s bound to be a go to weekender for any watch lover.
