1974 Seiko 6138-0030 Automatic Chronograph "Kakume"

1974 Seiko 6138-0030 Automatic Chronograph "Kakume"

In Japanese, "Kakume" translates roughly to "square eyes." And like two square, satin silver eyes, the sub registers of this massive chronograph stare back at you from their recessed position beneath the deep metallic blue of the dial. This example from November of '74 is about as good as it gets. The dial is nearly perfect, and captivates from every angle. A rich cobalt blue framed in black, and set with polished applied markers striped in white. The square sub registers are a soft silver, satin finished in a north south grain. The pencil style hour and minute hands are long a lean in flat black with white tips and their original luminous plots showing only a slight patina. The chronograph hands have retained their original bright orange hue and standout beautifully against the surrounding blue and silver. The matching bezel insert is incredibly well preserved showing only the slightest signs of wear. It comes attached to the original “fishbone” bracelet, though one of the end links is a replacement. Aside from one end link and a replacement crystal, it is completely original, and post service keeping near perfect time. The chronograph pushers are crisp and responsive with a snappy reset. As the demand for vintage Seiko chronographs continues to grow, opportunities to acquire those in this kind of condition have dropped tremendously. Don’t miss out on this one.
