For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. The first automatic chronograph in space, Col. William Pogue inadvertently cemented it’s position in history, and atop the list for collectors, when he wore his yellow dialed variant during the SkyLab missions of the 1970’s. It’s another variant, however, that has proven to be even more desirable and sought after. The silver dial variant was produced in such small numbers, that at one point, it was even thought to be a myth or a forgery. Examples in any condition are near impossible to source, and for most collectors, it’s likely to remain the missing corner of the trifecta. It goes without saying that we’re more than a bit excited to be able to offer this one. From May of 1972, its a clean, original example with just a touch of character that’s sure to elicit palpable “watch envy” among your cohorts. The dial is a crisp silver sunburst with a glossy lacquer finish in near mint condition. The luminous material on the markers is the original, and shows just a bit of graying color throughout. The rotating inner bezel shows some slight fading from UV exposure, but has retained most of its color, along with the silver “count up” printing. The polished hour and minute hands are free of oxidation or corrosion, and the luminous material within is the original, and bears an even gray patina. The chronograph hands are a fiery red/orange that is both complementary, and in perfect contrast to the dial, and neither show any paint loss or chipping. The outer bezel in metallic red and blue shows some light wear, but has retained its vivid colors, and the scaling is still clear and legible throughout. The case is unpolished and the original finishes are still quite visible. The chronograph functions are snappy and responsive, and post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time. It comes attached to the original Stelux “Fishbone” bracelet for a seamless finish, and is completely original aside from a replacement crystal. This is a fantastic example of a truly rare piece of vintage Seiko history, and an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed.
