Seiko produced no shortage of sport divers in the late 60's and 70's, but none so memorable and as sought after as those that carry the "Rally" distinction. So named for their checkered bezels and dials, they are an instantly recognizable combination of color and cool. This example from December of 1970 is no exception. The dial is matte black with stepped applied markers and large luminous plots. The luminous material is the original and has some darkening around the edges. The minute track is comprised of baby blue and white blocks with no fading or paint loss. The hour and minute hands are broad batons with a black stripe through the center. Some light oxidation is visible along the polished surfaces. The sweep hand stands out in a contrasting golden orange, though there are a couple of places where it is missing paint. The barrel shaped case is unpolished with sharp edges and the original finishes are still quite visible. The knurled bezel rotates smoothly in either direction with the perfect amount of resistance tension for keeping it in place once set. The “count up” insert is checked in silver and black with almost no fading and only moderate wear. The original acrylic pip is in place, but I did re-lume it as the original luminous material was missing. Completely original aside from a replacement crystal, this is a great overall example of one of Seiko’s most sought after sport divers. We’ve paired it with a olive drab RAF NATO that works perfectly with the dial and bezel, and offers great comfort on the wrist. The hacking 6106 is keeping near perfect time post service, and is ready to provide many more years of reliable service.
