1966 Seiko 7619-7020 5 Sportsmatic Deluxe 25j Automatic

At the top of the Sportsmatic line, Seiko’s “Deluxe” models offered affordable sophistication and classic mid-century design. This example from May of 1966 is packed with detail, nuance, and style. The dial is a silver sunburst with a heavy grain and lacquered finish that’s a veritable playground for light at every angle. There is a blemish just above the 10 o’clock marker, but it does little to detract from its overall appearance. It is set with applied monument markers, and each is cut with cross hair bevels. The hands are polished dauphines that are surprisingly legible against the “light show” that is the dial. A steeply beveled minute chapter frames the dial, and rises to meet a wide fluted inner bezel. The barrel shaped case has a sunburst finish along the top and slopes downward to the tapered polished lugs. The recessed crown sits at about the four o’clock position, and above it is a separate pusher that is used to quickset the date. This is a feature that is unique to the 7619 models. The day cannot be quickset, but can be set manually set by rolling the hands in either direction. The case back is only lightly worn, and its dolphin insignia and other markings are all clearly visible. We’ve paired it with a distressed black leather that gives it a bit of a formal finish, as this piece is just begging to be worn with a crisp black suit. It is completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and the 7619 is keeping near perfect time post service. With more than a half-century of experience, this one is ready to bring some class to any line up.
