At the top of the Sportsmatic line, Seiko’s “Deluxe” models offered affordable sophistication and classic mid-century design. This example from October of 1966 is packed with detail, nuance, and style. The dial is a perfect silver sunburst with subtle graining and a lacquered finish that’s a veritable playground for light at every angle. The applied markers are nicely detailed with grooved edges and slick black enamel inlay. The sword style hands are tapered to a fine point and sport a mirror finish save a matching black stripe at center. The day and date sit beneath a framed window, and the day is in Japanese only. Only the date can be quick set, and as its a signature of the 7619 “Deluxe” models, that’s achieved by pressing a pusher on the side of the case above the crown. The case architecture is a thing of beauty. Retaining all of its original finishes, the sunburst top slopes downward to faceted, polished lugs and contoured edges. It’s topped with a low profile, fluted bezel with a unique flat top finish. The etched case back has some light wear, but all of the original markings are still clearly intact, with the dolphin at center denoting its water resistance. This is the first example that we’ve acquired to have the original bracelet still attached and it offers a perfect finish. The end links make for a near seamless transition to the rolled jubilee style links. The clasp carries an engraved “5” badge and closes firmly for a secure fit. It’s an absolute stunner all around, and completely original aside from a replacement crystal. Post service, it’s keeping near perfect time, and the quick set function operates smoothly.  If a classic mid-century dress has been on your list, this one won’t disappoint.
