1977 Seiko 6139-6005 Automatic Chronograph “Pogue”

For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. From the “Pepsi” tachymetric bezel, the the “H-Link” bracelet, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of, the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. From July of ‘77, this 6005 is just phenomenal, and exhibits an irresistibly unique patina. The golden sunburst “T” dial is spectacular. The recessed minute register has developed a nearly uniform oxidation in the finish that casts a dark shadow border along the circumference, and lighter radial patina as it reaches the center. The finish appears to be unbroken, and the dial color still shines brightly behind the oxidized pattern. This is the first I’ve seen to develop in this way, and makes for a standout example. The hour and minute hands are free of oxidation and corrosion and have retained their original polished finish. The luminous material on the markers and hands has remained a clean, bright white with no visible patina. The chronograph hands are glossy bright red with no chipping or paint loss, and the inner bezel is a rich, vivid yellow with no fading from UV exposure. The case is unpolished and the original finishes are still quite crisp throughout. The outer tachymetric bezel shows virtually no visible wear, and the navy blue portion has uniformly faded to the coveted turquoise in color. It comes attached to the original tapered “H” link bracelet with its original end links for a seamless finish. Post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. Aside from a replacement crystal, it’s completely original, and a great opportunity to own a vintage Seiko “grail” with a unique twist. Don’t miss this opportunity to add Seiko’s history making chronograph to your own roster.
