1974 (SEA) Seiko 6139-7002 Automatic Chronograph “Decimal”
1974 (SEA) Seiko 6139-7002 Automatic Chronograph “Decimal”
With the majority of the 6139 line up built around racing and sports oriented designs, a casual departure with versatile appeal is a welcome addition for many collectors. Competing against the overt 70’s styling of the 8020, or 8030 (examples of both can be seen in our archive), the 7002 is a timeless classic with a subtle and well balanced layout. This example from April of ‘74 is solid proof of just that. The dial is matte black with applied markers and rich patina in the luminous. The minute track is divided into segmented white blocks, and just behind it, the 1/5th seconds hashes have faded from a red orange to gold. Framing the dial is a decimal chapter than can be used to calculate anything from production rates to sports statistics by dividing minutes and hours into into 100 equal parts. The bright white hour and minute hands offer great contrast and are easily legible at a glance. The chronograph hands have faded to a canary yellow, and add a nice color pop against the mostly monochromatic layout. The case is a soft barrel tonneau that’s unpolished, and the factory finishes remain intact. It comes attached to the original tapered “fishbone” bracelet for a seamless fit and finish that’s easy on the wrist. It’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal and a light touch up of some missing paint on the chronograph sweep Post service it’s keeping excellent time and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. With its heavy Stelux bracelet and Roman day wheel, this example is a likely South East Asian (SEA) variant sold through Seiko’s distribution partner, Thong Sia. Clean, balanced, with great lines and a crisp layout, it’s an easy go to for every occasion and sure to be a fast favorite on any roster.
