The build quality and design layouts of Seiko’s early Pulsar offerings is undeniable. They present a real opportunity to acquire top quality Seiko engineering at Pulsar’s bargain prices… for now. We’d urge you to set aside any notion of its present day entry level offerings, and discover the sweet spot of the vintage market offered up by late 70’s, and early 80’s Pulsar. If you’re still not convinced, consider this “Railroad” watch from March of ‘81. The Pulsar Y513 movement is nearly identical to the Seiko 7546 housed in the first quartz sport divers Seiko ever produced. Built on the 6309 platform, it’s a rock solid performer that’s built to last, and nearly 40 years later, still performs like new. Unable to say no to a great Arabic dial, this one features a classic layout known as the “Canadian Dial” that was officially adopted by the CPR (Canadian Pacific Railroad) in 1883. Unlike it’s predecessor, the “Ferguson Dial,” which placed emphasis on minutes, and hours were secondary, the Canada standard used a prominent 12 hour track along the outside, and a secondary inner 24 hour scale. The appearance was also standardized. To qualify for railroad approval, the dial had to be white, the numerals printed in a clear and conspicuous black Arabic, and at a later point, the inner ring of numerals in red. The hour and minute hands were also required to be a bold design, and black in color for ease of legibility. Accuracy for approved time pieces had to meet chronometer standards, so the advent of quartz movements made meeting that standard much less complicated. Rigorous testing and servicing of prior mechanical versions made keeping a watch “railroad safety approved” an expensive affair. Railroad layouts have left an indelible mark on horological history, and for enthusiasts of either or both interests, a great example can be a prized addition to any collection. This one is unpolished and completely original, including the hand polished acrylic crystal. Post service, its keeping perfect time, and we’ve paired it with a textured black leather with white stitching that partners perfectly with the flawless dial. For those hunting eminent build quality, classic design, and true value, you’re on the right “track.”
