Seiko’s Silver Wave references can trace their lineage all the way back to 1962, and the introduction of the brand’s first foray into diver’s watches. The first Silver Wave carried a depth rating of 50m, and was the foundation of Seiko’s diving dynasty. As a category, the Silver Wave would eventually evolve into an outlet for JDM only stand alone models, or specialized JDM versions of export models. They vary stylistically from clean casuals to sportier layouts, and even rugged tool divers. Characteristically, they are typically highly water resistant due to robust case architecture, and feature screw down crowns and case backs. This example from May of ’78 might lead with a refined finish, but at its core, it’s a solid, capable tool watch with performance to spare under the hood. The case is a burly take on classic lines with a noticeable, but well balanced heft. Beneath the bezel, the flawless white silver dial sports a “north to south” linen grain under glossy lacquer finish. Applied baguettes with polished bevels and black striping mark the hours, and the hour and minute hands are tapered dauphines with corresponding finishes. A thin sweep tracks the seconds, and single line of script text denotes is JDM bonafides. Framing the dial is a raised minute chapter, and a framed day/date (Kanji/Eng) window sits at three. The large recessed crown is comfortably positioned at four, and the screw down “wave” case back is free of tool marring. Driving the hands is the venerable cal. 6306; a domestic market alternative to the 6309 that features a higher jewel count (21 vs. 17) and hacking seconds. In either configuration, it’s a stout, workhorse movement built for reliability. This one is unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement mineral crystal, and post service is keeping near perfect time. With its close association to Seiko’s diving heritage, we’ve paired it with a black “tropic sport” style strap for a fitting fit and finish. As capable as it is versatile, its sure to earn a regular spot in any rotation.
