For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. From the “Pepsi” tachymetric bezel, the the “H-Link” bracelet, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. From June of ’77, this is an exceptional example overall, and among the last to be produced. The golden sunburst dial is near perfect aside from a few very small oxidation lines visible in the minute register. The original luminous material on the markers shows only a hint of patina, and remains a crisp bright white throughout. The hour and minute hands have retained their bright polished finish, and the original luminous within is a clean white, free of any degradation. The chronograph hands are a deep red/orange with no chipping or paint loss, and the inner bezel has faded to a light, though even canary yellow throughout. The case is unpolished showing only light wear, and the original finishes are still somewhat visible.. The outer tachymetric bezel in metallic red and blue has a light fade and moderate wear, but the markings are still clearly legible. We’ve paired it with an oiled sienna, smooth suede strap that complements the dial, and is comfortable for regular wear. Post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. Aside from a replacement crystal and crown, it’s completely original, and a great opportunity to own a watch that has reached near “grail” status among collectors.
