1977 Seiko 6139-6002 Automatic Chronograph “Pogue”

For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. From the “Pepsi” tachymetric bezel, the the “H-Link” bracelet, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. From January of ‘77, this example certainly has character and patina, and I couldn’t resist the obligation I felt to pour my best effort into bringing it back to its best. The yellow sunburst dial is fairly even golden “honey” color throughout, however there has been some thinning and wear through of the lacquer in the upper third. Due to the process in which these dials were manufactured, oxygen penetrating the lacquer finish and reacting to the layer of silver beneath the paint  causes oxidation. This will typically present like the discoloration visible here. Fortunately, the luminous material remains mostly unaffected with only a light patina throughout.  The hour and minute hands also exhibit some light oxidation that only just subdues their polished finish. The chronograph hands are bright red, with only minor paint loss on the minute register “tear drop,” and the inner rotating bezel has faded to soft canary yellow. The outer bezel shows little wear, with a pleasing and even color fade. However you view its presentation, there is no doubting its performance. Post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. It’s unpolished and the factory finishes are still clearly visible, and completely original aside from a replacement crystal. We’ve paired it with a smooth chestnut leather that offers versatility, vintage appeal, and great comfort on the wrist. A great opportunity to own a vintage Seiko icon that has reached near “grail” status among aspiring collectors, it’s a great example overall and sure to be a fast favorite on any roster.
