1976 Seiko 6139-7100 Automatic Chronograph “Storm Trooper/Fujitsubo"

1976 Seiko 6139-7100 Automatic Chronograph “Storm Trooper/Fujitsubo"

Like the “Darth Vader,” this rarer white dial variant of the 6139-7100 gets it's own “Lucasian” moniker, and is most often referred to as the "Storm Trooper." In Japan, however, it’s known as “Fujitsubo” for its resemblance to a particular style of bowl when viewed dial side down. Nicknames aside, this example from December of ‘76 is a killer racing chronograph, and one of my personal favorites as a fan of clean white layouts. The black on white dial is full of stark contrast, and a well balanced layout. At its edge is a matte silver tachymetric chapter that's steeply set, and creates tremendous depth. The hour and minute hands are polished steel with black overlay and clean original luminous, and the glossy black chronograph hands are free of chipping or paint loss. The beveled mineral crystal plays perfectly with the overall angular appearance, and seamlessly blends into the conical bezel. The case is unpolished, and the signature machined finish on the hooded lugs is clean and well defined, though the bezel may have been lightly polished at some point. In addition, it comes attached to the original Z050S “Fishbone” bracelet for a seamless fit and finish. It’s completely original aside from a replacement mineral crystal. Post service it’s keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are snappy and responsive. A clean “track side” chronograph with a dashboard inspired aesthetic, it’s sure to earn a spot behind the wheel in your rotation.
