1975 Seiko 6139-6005 Automatic Chronograph “Pogue”

For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. From the “Pepsi” tachymetric bezel, the the “H-Link” bracelet, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. From May of ‘75, this is a phenomenal example overall. The golden sunburst dial is mesmerizing, and as is common for this reference, has developed some patina due to the oxidation of the silver beneath the paint and lacquer finish. It presents most prominently in the sub register as a series of dark lines along the tight concentric circular pattern, and a few small scattered points throughout. The hour and minute hands are free of corrosion and have retained their original polished finish. The luminous material on the markers and hands is still bright white and free of any degradation. The chronograph hands are bright red, and free of any chipping or paint loss, and the inner bezel is a vivid even yellow with no fading from UV exposure. The case is unpolished and the original finishes are still clearly intact, and the corners are razor sharp. The outer tachymetric bezel in a rich metallic red and blue shows virtually no visible wear aside from a single blemish at the ‘130’ mark. Post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. We’ve paired it with a retro oiled sienna with a soft grain that’s as comfortable as it is versatile. Aside from a replacement crystal, it’s completely original, and a great opportunity to own a watch that has reached near “grail” status among collectors. Don’t miss this opportunity to add some coveted Seiko history to your own roster.
