From Seiko’s Daini division, this bright bold casual from March of ‘73 is an elusive variant to land, and to date, the only example that I’ve seen that wasn’t a non-working salesman’s sample. In fact, the only other like we’ve ever offered was sample piece that built out using components from similar pieces. It was clearly in production at some point, but it seems few rolled off the line, and for a very short period. There are no shortage of orange Seiko diver models spanning all the way back to the early 1970’s, but only a few orange, or partially orange casuals, and all of which appear to also be from the 7006 line up. Perhaps seeing so few of them is what makes this one such a standout. The flat “sunset” orange is contrasted by a glossy black minute track, as well as a crisp white cross-hair quartering the dial. The markers are polished and applied baguettes with small luminous plots along the chapter, and a polished frame surrounds the day/date window at three. The hour and minute hands are slender polished batons with black striping, and counting the seconds is a lengthy black sweep. The dial is framed by a steep sloping chapter ring polished to a mirror finish that adds tremendous light and depth. It rises to meet the original domed hardlex that we’ve chosen to leave in place. It bears a few light blemishes on the surface, but they are only visible at certain angles. The case is classic Seiko with sleek beveled edges and integrated lugs. It’s unpolished, completely original, and post service is keeping near perfect time. The date can be quickset via the crown, and the day is semi-quickset. We’ve paired it with a steel gray suede with white stitching that keeps the focus on the dial, and offers versatility and comfort on the wrist. If some classic color is missing in your line up, this one won’t disappoint.
