1972 Seiko 6139-7039 Automatic Chronograph “Speedy”

1972 Seiko 6139-7039 Automatic Chronograph “Speedy”

With a case and dial layout that appear as though it were ripped right out of the gauge cluster of a Vietnam era helicopter, Seiko’s 6139-7039 is often compared to Omega’s venerable Speedy Pro. The dial is a black and white tri-level with depth and character to spare. A recessed minute register sits beneath a matte black middle, and above that, a raised hour and minute track with long and lean hash marks. Framing it all is a steep chapter with tachymetric scaling. The hour and minute hands are black and white and seem to float above the dial, and the chronograph hands are finished in a seamless flat white. The case is tightly contoured with short sharp lugs, sloping corners, and a recessed crown is positioned at three o’clock. A thin angular bezel, along with the beveled hardlex, adds the right amount of height, and further lends to an overall military aesthetic that sets this piece apart in the 6139 lineup. The 6139B is keeping near perfect time post service, with a snappy response from the chronograph functions. We’ve paired it with a heavily grained chestnut leather for a killer combo that’s as versatile as it is comfortable. From February of ‘72, it’s unpolished and completely original right down to the factory hardlex. The crystal shows a few light blemishes from deeper scratches prior to polishing, but I wanted to preserve as much material as possible, and keep the beveled edge intact. A permanent resident on our list of favorites, we’re certain you’ll enjoy it as much as we do.
