The first Bell-Matics were released to the public in 1966, and were at that time the very first automatic wrist alarm watches with a central rotor. Seiko continued production of the line for another 12 years with a wide array of styles ranging from colorful casuals, to refined classics. This 7012 from May of ‘72 has a polished and sophisticated layout, and it features the 27 jewel variant of Seiko’s 4006 calibre. Import tariffs on luxury watches (those over 21 jewels) made them too expensive to offer to the North American market, so acquiring one can be a bit of a challenge in itself. Getting your hands on one in this condition, however, is an even rarer treat. The case has crisp lines, lengthy tapered lugs, and a low profile bezel. The flawless dial is a deep charcoal sunburst with a lacquered finish that's nicely contrasted by polished and beveled batons and split baguette markers with luminous inlay. Framing the dial is a dropped minute chapter and a thin black alarm cursor ring with a bright red indicator. The bell has a bright, crisp ring that is sure to get your attention. It’s unpolished, and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and post service it’s keeping near perfect time. The alarm functions are smooth and precisely aligned. It comes attached to the original nine link bracelet with chain-link style hinges that’s both comfortable on the wrist, and adds a classic finish. Remarkably well preserved, it’s sure to be a noteworthy addition to any collection.
