For vintage Seiko fans, it doesn't get any more iconic than the "Pogue." After purchasing his own 6139 at an exchange on base, Col. William Pogue trained for 6 months with his trusty new companion strapped to his wrist. It proved a trustworthy and reliable tool throughout rigorous simulations, and so was taken along side his NASA issued Omega Speedmaster Professional when he began his actual mission as pilot of Skylab 4. Today, “Pogue” is a catch all term used to describe any of the several variants within the 6139-60XX family, but for discerning collectors, only one stands out as the “True Pogue.” For those pursuing the very model that the Colonel himself wore, only a yellow “Resist” dial 6139-6005 will do. His personal Seiko was sold at auction several years ago to one very fortunate new owner, so this example from July of ‘71 is likely as close as you’ll get to the original... Albeit, in much better condition. The deep, golden yellow sunburst (T) dial is stunning, and the original luminous material on the hands and markers bears little patina. As is typical of these dials, some oxidation in the finish is present along the border of the minute register, as well as portions of the minute track. The rotating inner bezel is a bright, vivid yellow with only minor fade, and the bezel insert shows very little wear. The case is unpolished with crisp corners and the original finishes are still intact. It comes attached to the original non-tapered “H” link bracelet for a seamless finish, and is completely original aside from a replacement crystal. Post service it’s keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are flawless. An honest and complete “True Pogue,” this is an absolute grail for every collector, and an opportunity that’s sure to be a short one.
