1971 Seiko 6117-6410 Automatic “Navigator Timer” (GMT/Resist)

Seiko's sophomore “Pilot” reference came in the form of the 6117-6410. Carrying the same name as its predecessor, this Navigator Timer is a classically designed GMT with several points of improvement over the former. With a broader tonneau style case, the 24 hour bezel was repositioned to frame the dial, and split into two segmented halves: red for daylight hours, and blue for night. Rotated via the crown rather than as an exterior bezel, it is less likely to be jarred out of position once set. The dial, in a subtly textured matte black, is contrasted for legibility by long and sizable white luminous markers. Tracking a second time zone is made easy by the "dog-legged" bright red, fixed 24 hour hand. The 6117B adds a hacking function (seconds setting) not available on the previous model, and is a robust and reliable caliber built for durable longevity. This "Resist” dial example from April of ’71 is fantastic. The dial bears only a few very light blemishes that are difficult to mark without magnification. The tapered hour and minute batons have mostly retained their original polished finish, though some scuffing is visible near the post holes. The inner bezel is nearly flawless with just a few pinpoint flecks to the paint in the blue block portion. There is no fading in color, and it rotates smoothly in either direction. The case is crisp and unpolished, and it’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal. Post service, it’s keeping near perfect time, and we’ve paired it with a premium oiled Sienna strap that gives it the versatility to seamlessly move from the cockpit to cocktails. A dream on the wrist, and up for any occasion, this GMT is a lesson in timeless styling and versatility.
