1968 JDM Seiko 4006-7000 Automatic “Bell-Matic” 27j Day/Date

$0.00

The first Bell-Matics were released to the public in 1966, and were at that time the very first automatic wrist alarm watches with a central rotor. Seiko continued production of the line for another 12 years with a wide array of styles ranging from colorful casuals, to refined classics. This example from March of ‘68 is a continuation of the original case architecture with a clean casual layout, great lines, and classic versatility. It also houses the 27 jewel variant of Seiko’s 4006 calibre. Import tariffs on luxury watches (those over 21 jewels) made them too expensive to offer to the North American market at the time, so acquiring one of your own can require some patience. The dial is a silvery white linen with a “north to south” grain, glossy lacquer finish, and polished applied markers with black striping. The broad dauphine hands are polished and striped to match the markers, and a slender sweep counts the seconds. The alarm bezel is polished and fluted with a red cursor that’s easy to see and has been carefully aligned for accuracy. The case is unpolished with crisp corners and the factory finishes still clearly visible. It is completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and the bell has a strong, bright tone. The date can be quickset by pressing the alarm toggle button, and the day can be semi quickset. Post service, the 4006 is keeping excellent time, and the alarm functions are smooth and easy to set. We’ve paired it with a smooth rust leather that showcases the dial, and provides a comfortable fit and finish on the wrist. An early JDM variant, it’s a great piece of Seiko history, and likely the loudest addition to any collection.
