1980 Pulsar (Seiko) Y563-6019 100m Quartz Sport Diver Day/Date

$0.00

Originally owned by the Hamilton Watch Co., the Pulsar brand was introduced as the worlds first all electronic digital watch with a digital display (LED). It was a technological luxury in 1972, and in fact, the first Pulsar watch was housed in an 18kt gold case and sold for $2100 (nearly $13000 today)! As digital watches began to flood the market, the novelty and the price began to decline. In 1978, Seiko acquired the Pulsar brand and marketed it as a quartz only line that would continue to lead with innovation as its vision. The Pulsar “Calculator” watch was nothing if not innovative, and a wildly successful model. The build quality and design of Seiko’s early Pulsar offerings is undeniable. If you’re looking to get some of Seiko’s best at Pulsar’s bargain price, we’d urge you to set aside any notion of its present day entry level offerings, and discover the sweet spot of the vintage market that is early 80’s Pulsar. If you need more encouragement, look no further than this 100m Sport Diver from December of 1980. If it looks vaguely familiar, that’s because the dial shares a color and finish used on only one other watch in the Seiko stable (yeah that one...). The dial is perfect, and it’s set with polished applied markers with black striping to match the bi-color hands. The second hand should also be familiar as it was our introduction to the styling that would later be featured on the 7A28 sport models. The day/date window has an applied frame, and the “Pulsar” badge and logo are polished and applied as well. Framing the dial is a steep golden chapter with an hour and minute track that rises to meet the original mineral crystal. There are a couple of very light blemishes visible, but it is certainly to clean to warrant replacement. The knurled bezel is well proportioned and is a friction style that rotates smoothly in either direction. The insert goes back to the well in a “Pepsi” color combo, and shows virtually no signs of wear or fading. The case is classic “all lug” Seiko styling with a screw down crown at the three. It is unpolished, and the finishes and corners are still factory crisp. The case back is also screw down, and both secure tightly. It’s attached to the original bracelet that bears the striped block “P” on the clasp. It’s completely original, and the movement has been cleaned and a fresh battery installed. We’re certain that interest in these early pulsar models will continue to grow, and suggest getting on board early while there are still bargains to be found!
