For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. For collectors, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. Among the last examples of this model ever produced, this example from February of ‘78 has aged beautifully. With just the right amount of exposure, the dial has evenly faded from a deep navy to a stormy shade of gray. The luminous material on the markers is the original, and has just begun to develop a light cream patina. The rotating inner bezel has faded to an even ashen gray, but the silver markings are still crisp and easily legible. The polished hour and minute hands bear some light oxidation, but are free of corrosion or degradation to the luminous material. The chronograph hands are a fiery red/orange that is both complementary, and in perfect contrast to the dial. The outer bezel in crisp, metallic red and blue shows only light wear, and it too has a nice even fade throughout. The case remains unpolished with the original factory finishes still visible and crisp. The chronograph functions are snappy and responsive, and post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time. We’ve paired it with a soft khaki suede that flows seamlessly from the case, and provides a comfortable fit and finish. Completely original aside from a replacement crystal, it’s an absolutely stunning and unique example that would make a great addition to any roster.
