If asked to describe the perfect casual timepiece, I would immediately envision a crisp Arabic dial with a balanced layout, minimal text, and striking contrast. It would have well proportioned baton hands, and be housed in a sleek, nicely contoured stainless steel case. Simple, timeless, and of course, reliable. Seiko’s 7009-8129 is a categorical example. This one from August of ‘77, features a silver sunburst dial with a glossy lacquered finish on which large black Arabic numerals in a clean modern font have been printed. At the the three o’clock position is a framed day/date window, both of which can be quickset via the crown. The case architecture is classic Seiko with a mix of smooth lines and sharp angles, and a contoured curvature that grabs the wrist. Driving the hands is the Daini 7009, a sturdy and dependable workhorse that’s both robust and accurate. This piece is unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and post service, it’s keeping near perfect time. We’ve paired it with a khaki canvas strap with white stitching for a casual, comfortable finish. Timeless at any age, it’s an affordable classic that’s sure to be a fast favorite in your rotation.
