The term "Yachtman" appears to have been of questionable origin as it pertains to this particular chronograph, and clearly because it looks much closer to home trackside, far from any body of water suitable for yachting. Without a doubt, it is the embodiment of 1970's racing for the wrist. The case is a brawny 44.5mm of sloping contours and subtle corners, and this JDM “Speed Timer” variant from March of ‘76 is phenomenal. The bezel is the standout feature here in black with a metallic, fiery red tachymetric scale and very little visible wear. Beneath it, a steep glossy black chapter frames the matte black dial and contrasting sub registers in a soft silver. The larger of the two counting minutes, and it's smaller partner above tracks up to 12 hours. Each has begun to develop the coppery patina that’s nearly characteristic of this model. The hour and minute hands are flat white batons with tapered tips, and a red orange sweep totals the seconds. As with many Speed Timer models, no luminous is used. Like the hands, the applied markers are finished with a flat white top. The 6138 offers independent quick set of both the day and date, and can be manually wound. The chronograph functions are crisp and responsive and post service, its keeping near perfect time. It’s unpolished, and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and comes attached to the original “H” link, 5 Sports bracelet in stainless steel. A stunning example of a JDM classic, it’s sure to turn heads wherever it lands.
