The first Bell-Matics were released in November of 1966, and over the next 12 years a wide variety of styles and color combinations would guarantee that those looking for a robust wrist alarm with undeniable presence could find exactly that. Seiko’s 4006 calibre movements were available in 17j export, and 27j domestic market versions (there’s even a very short lived 21j variant), both of which offer solid reliability, and relevant design decades after production. From classic dress styles to colorful casuals, there’s a “Bell” to suit every taste. This example from August of ‘74 is as striking and vibrant to the ear, as it is to the eye. The 40mm cushion case has sloping contours that hug the wrist, and a wide bezel with a glossy, royal blue inlay. The dial is a deep, navy blue sunburst sporting satin finished applied markers with long white minute hashes between. The rotating alarm bezel is a teal on navy split marked in five minute intervals with a bright red cursor to denote the time of the bell. Polished and striped batons track and hours and minutes, and the bright red second hand adds continuity and characer. It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and post service, the 4006 is keeping near perfect time. The bell has a bright crisp ring, sets smoothly, and has been carefully aligned for the tightest accuracy. It comes attached to the original “block” link bracelet that’s comfortable on the wrist, and provides a seamless fit and finish. In outstanding condition, and showing very little wear considering it’s nearly 50 years of age, this one will certainly be a bright spot in any collection for many years to come.
