1972 Seiko 6139-7039 Automatic Chronograph “Speedy/Baby Jumbo”

1972 Seiko 6139-7039 Automatic Chronograph “Speedy/Baby Jumbo”

With a case and dial layout that appear as though it were ripped right out of the gauge cluster of a Vietnam era helicopter, Seiko’s 6139-7039 is often compared to Omega’s venerable Speedy Pro. The dial is a black and white tri-level with depth and character to spare. A recessed minute register sits beneath a matte black middle, and above that, a raised hour and minute track with long and lean hash marks. Framing it all is a steep chapter with tachymetric scaling. The hour and minute hands are black and white and appear to float above the dial, and the chronograph hands are finished in a flat white as well. The unpolished case is tightly contoured with short, sharp lugs and a recessed crown at three o’clock. It’s original “east to west” brushed grain finish remains intact, and the corners are sharp aside from a wear mark along the lower right lug. The canister style bezel, along with the beveled hardlex, adds the right amount of height, and creates a military aesthetic that sets this piece apart in the 6139 lineup. It’s keeping near perfect time post service with snappy and responsive chronograph functions. Attached is the original triple hinged, “chiclet” bracelet that provides a seamless finish through the end links, and comfort on the wrist. This example from February of ‘72 is outstanding. It’s completely original including the hardlex crystal which I opted to leave in place due to minimal wear. A favorite among collectors and one of our most often requested references, this one is sure to be a highlight wherever it lands.
