As the “Surf” culture took the west coast by storm in the late 1960’s and 70’s, so did the demand for reliable light dive watches. Seiko was paying attention, and made efforts to deliver colorful casuals that could also serve as companions to those that spent most of their time just beyond the California coast line. One model in particular was heavily marketed to, and gained popularity with surfers due to its rugged construction and bright blue dial. Seiko’s 6106-8237 featured a barrel shaped tonneau case with rounded lugs, and a wide beveled bezel. Beneath the domed crystal, a bright cobalt blue sunburst dial with a glossy lacquer finish made it hard to miss. Large square luminous markers offered easy legibility along with polished batons and a pale yellow tapered sweep. Almost 50 years later , this example from June of ‘72 is a timeless “west coast” classic that’s as reliable as it ever was. The dial is virtually flawless. The luminous markers are the original material with almost no visible patina. The hour and minute hands have retained their original brightly polished finish, and the pastel yellow sweep is free of chipping or paint loss. We’ve paired it with a smooth brown leather with white stitching that showcases the dial, and offers comfort and versatility on the wrist.  The hacking 6106C is keeping near perfect time post service and ready to provide many more years of dependable service. If a colorful, capable casual is on your list, this one won’t disappoint.
