For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. From the “Pepsi” tachymetric bezel, the the “H-Link” bracelet, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. For many collectors, the earliest iterations of the 6139 hold a special significance due to their extreme rarity. What may seem like subtle differences to the uninitiated, are in fact the markers of exclusivity for those in the know. If you’re looking for proof, its right there on the dial. From June of ‘70, this would have been among the last “proof” models produced. By the latter part of 1970, the first “Resist” models had already surfaced, and with them changes to the case and chronograph sweep. This meant that there was only about one year in history from which a “proof” model could be obtained. This example is phenomenal overall. The golden sunburst dial is nearly perfect, displaying  only the slightest sign of oxidation along the minute track of the sub register.  The hour and minute hands are perfect, and free of oxidation and corrosion. The original luminous material on the markers and hands has almost no visible patina, remaining bright white throughout.  The chronograph hands are bright fiery red with no chipping or paint loss, and the sweep is the correct “two-piece” style with a center stud only seen on the earliest examples. The inner bezel rotates freely in either direction via the crown, and has faded slightly to a lighter but vivid yellow. The case is unpolished and the original finishes are still quite crisp. It sports the correct “notched crown” again featured only on proof models. The outer tachymetric bezel in a rich metallic red and blue has almost no signs of wear or fade. It comes attached to the original non-tapered “H” link bracelet with its original end links. Post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. It’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and a rare opportunity to own an historic Seiko first.
