As the “Surf” culture took the west coast by storm in the late 1960’s and 70’s, so did the demand for reliable light dive watches. Seiko was paying attention, and made efforts to deliver colorful casuals that could also serve as companions to those that spent most of their time just beyond the California coast line. One model in particular was heavily marketed to, and gained popularity with surfers due to its rugged construction and bright blue dial. Seiko’s 6106-8237 featured a barrel shaped tonneau case with rounded lugs, and a wide beveled bezel. Beneath the thick domed “hardlex” crystal, a bright cobalt blue sunburst dial with a glossy lacquer finish made it hard to miss. Large square luminous markers offered easy legibility, along with polished batons and a bright orange, tapered sweep. Nearing 50 years later, this example from December of 1970 is a timeless classic with great patina, that’s as reliable as it ever was. The hour markers are original and have developed an even cream patina, and the sweep has faded from blaze orange to a soft coppery gold. The luminous in the hands had begun to crumble, so I carefully relumed them to match the dial. It is unpolished and completely original aside from a NOS replacement crystal. The hacking 6106C is keeping near perfect time post service, and is ready to provide many more years of dependable service. We’ve paired it with a slate green canvas over leather that showcases the dial, and offers comfort and versatility on the wrist. With summer on the way, this hardworking casual diver would make a great addition to any lineup.
