1968 Seiko 6117-6019 Automatic World Time “GMT” (Proof)

1968 Seiko 6117-6019 Automatic World Time “GMT” (Proof)

Seiko’s third iteration in the World Time series, the 6010/9 is the last of the firsts. A tightly refined version of it’s two predecessors, it has a polished and finished aesthetic that’s doubtful could be improved upon. A 38mm masterpiece with stout, tapered lugs, an oversized but well integrated crown, and a striking dial full of color, texture, and finish. This example from February of ‘68 is a stunner. The dial is a rich charcoal sunburst with a lacquered finish and applied markers. At its border is a segmented 24 hour track in silver for night, and copper brown for the day. Framing it is the “cities of the world” inner bezel which can be rotated via the crown to determine the time anywhere in the world instantly. The colors are bright and vivid, and there is no peeling or fading from exposure. The hands are a polished sword style along with a bright red 24 hour hand. The original luminous in both the cardinal markers and in the hands has developed an even khaki patina throughout. The case is unpolished with crisp corners and only light wear throughout. It’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and post service, is keeping near perfect time. We’ve paired it with a smooth tan leather with black stitching for a mouth watering combo that highlights the dial and offers comfort on the wrist. This particular model was only produced for about one year beginning in 1968 through part of ‘69, and as such, it is in fairly short supply. It can be difficult to track down, especially in this color way and condition. Well worth the effort in our opinion, as it’s a head turner on the wrist and my personal favorite of the vintage Seiko World Time models.
