1979 Seiko 6309-8230 Automatic Day/Date (Arabic)

1979 Seiko 6309-8230 Automatic Day/Date (Arabic)

If you’ve followed HCV for any length of time, you have probably noted my affinity for clean classic casuals with Arabic dials. Truly a timeless design that evokes mid-century class and defines functionality. This 6309 from July of ‘79 is no exception. It sports an inverse color scheme on which bright white raised numerals adorn a rich matte navy dial with little else to distract from the clean overall aesthetic. The hands are slim, tapered batons striped in white through the center, along with a slender reaching sweep hand. The shared day and date window is framed in steel, and the day can be toggled between English, and the rarely seen Portuguese. The case is a classic affair at a comfortable 37mm. It’s unpolished with a sleek linear design and sloping lugs. The crown sits recessed at the four o’clock position. Sharing a movement with the venerable “Turtle” diver, this time piece features the workhorse cal. 6309 with independent day/date quickset via the crown. A robust and reliable movement, it’s keeping fantastic time post service, and should offer many years of faithful service. Paired with a dark brown distressed leather to contrast the dial, this is a standout affordable that’s wrist ready and sure to garner attention.
