1977 Seiko 6138-8030 Automatic Chronograph “John Player Special”

1977 Seiko 6138-8030 Automatic Chronograph “John Player Special”

$750.00

Like it's Lotus 72 namesake, the 6139-8030 is a finely tuned machine with aerodynamic lines, crisp corners, and a slick black and gold paint job. At 40mm, it's not overpowering, and still has plenty of presence. The matte black dial is deeply set beneath the gold minute track and black tachymetric chapter. The cushion shaped sub registers are a rich satin gold with a distinct "north to south" grain. From April of “77, this is a fantastic example with tons of vintage racing inspired appeal. The dial is clean, though the luminous markers do have a fairly heavy, albeit uniform, patina. The hour and minute hands are black and white batons that offer great contrast and easy legibility against the dial. The chronograph hands follow suit with slim black batons totaling the hours and minutes, and a clean white sweep glides through the seconds. The 6138B is keeping near perfect time post service, and the chronograph functions are snappy and responsive. It’s self-winding, but can also be manually wound, and the day and date can be independently quick set via the crown in the second position. It’s completely original aside from a replacement mineral crystal, and the case is unpolished. It arrived without the bracelet, but we’ve paired it with a period correct, genuine Seiko flat three link that closely resembles the original, and offers a comfortable fit and finish.  A true Seiko great, the JPS is on every collectors list, and it’s easy to see why. A sleek vintage chronograph with historic racing heritage, great case lines, and a bold dial layout, it’s bound to find a regular spot in any rotation.
