1967 Seiko 6619-8090 "Sportsmatic" 5

1967 Seiko 6619-8090 "Sportsmatic" 5

The Seiko 5 story began in 1963, and to this day has left an indelible mark on affordable and reliable timepieces. As the name suggests, 5 characteristics need to be met for this classification, and they are an automatic or self-winding movement, water resistant case, day and date in a single window display, recessed crown at the four o'clock position, and shock resistance. With ruggedness in mind, Seiko certainly didn't forget that it should look great as well. Case in point, this 6619-8090 from January of '67 is a well built machine, and with a pretty face to boot. The silver sunburst dial has a glossy lacquered applique with a "crosshairs" finish. The applied markers are nicely detailed, and the day and date are in a contrasting black and white. The carved bezel provides great character, and the unpolished case has sharp contours and crisp lines throughout. We've paired it with a navy blue NATO for a comfortable casual finish. If a moderately priced midcentury dress style has been calling out to you, your search ends here.
