1975 Seiko 6109-8009-P Automatic Day/Date

1975 Seiko 6109-8009-P Automatic Day/Date

Looking to compete with the success that Seiko’s Daini division was seeing through their 7000 series of movements, the Suwa group set out to streamline, and redesign the 6119 into something both affordable, and eye catching to the entry level market. The result was the 6109. It was a bit thinner, and bore some features similar to the Daini movements. To house this new 6109, designers built a case with sleek lines, a wide body, and a low profile integrated bezel. Three dials were also available for this initial model: white, gradient blue, and as with this example, a gradient sunburst green. Two other models would eventually come off the line in 1975, but the following year production would not resume. The 6109 was shelved, and Seiko moved on. What’s left more than 40 years later is an opportunity to own rare piece of Seiko history at an affordable price. This example from April of ‘75 is completely original aside from a replacement day wheel. The ocean green dial has great depth and plays in the light no matter the angle. The hands are striped to match the hour markers, and the case is nicely contoured to comfortably fit most any wrist. Post service its keeping near perfect time, and we’ve paired it with a gold NATO that perfectly complements the dial. Finding nice examples may not be easy, but owning this one certainly will be.
